Engineering Environmental Standards for Across the Globe.

EMCON TechnologiesSM is a leader in the global exhaust emission control technology industry. The company serves worldwide passenger car, commercial vehicle and engine manufacturers. This $3 billion business has operations in 19 countries with 7,500 employees and several long-term joint venture relationships.

EMCON Technologies was spun off from ArvinMeritor in 2007. The company was a pioneer in the emissions control business, introducing the first catalytic converters for passenger cars in 1974 and was the first to introduce stainless steel and subsequently titanium exhaust systems. As one of the founders of the exhaust after-treatment business, the company has long been known for its ability to bring products with greater efficiency, quality and performance for original equipment manufacturers of engines and vehicles, to end-users.

The company has spent more than three decades developing effective emissions control products. EMCON Technologies has extensive experience as a systems integrator offering numerous applications to customers worldwide. EMCON Technologies is a major supplier of three-way catalytic converters, diesel oxidation catalysts and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) for passenger cars. Worldwide customers include most of the world's major car manufacturers.

Since 2005, EMCON Technologies has become a leading independent supplier of exhaust aftertreatment to the world's truck and commercial vehicle engine manufacturers.

Commercial Vehicles and Non-Road Market

The emission control technologies offered for the Commercial Vehicle and Non-Road markets are designed for a diverse range of applications including on- and off-highway diesel engines, urban-use commercial vehicles, and non-road machines and engines for a wide range of duty cycles.

The commercial vehicle emission business group has introduced products to meet Euro 4 and Euro 5, EEV and EPA2002 and EPA2007 heavy-, medium- and light-duty truck emissions standards. EMCON's commercial vehicle customers include Iveco, DAF/Paccar, DaimlerChrysler, Caterpillar and Volvo. The company was one of the first to introduce Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and large Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) to the on-highway market. Products currently in development will satisfy future applications to meet future emission standards such as Euro 6, EPA2010, Japan 09 and Tier 4 and Stage 3b nonroad standards. These products include combined SCR/DPF systems which will provide extremely high reductions in NOx and particulate emissions.

Across the globe, environmental standards for emissions of particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen from all diesel engines are becoming increasingly stringent. New products are being developed for the emerging markets in Asia and for new applications in the non-road market.

EMCON Technologies has advanced emissions research and design expertise, proven manufacturing capability and extensive experience as a systems integrator to deliver solutions that can be tailored to meet unique needs and applications across the world.

Thermal Regenerator (TR)

Thermal Regenerator (TR)

The TR is an independent fuel burner designed to provide rapid regeneration of a DPF on demand. It is currently the only such device on the market which is capable of ensuring complete regeneration of a filter at any time and at point in the drive cycle. The TR is in production for EPA2007 applications and will be applied on U.S. 2010 and Tier 4/Stage 3b compliant vehicles and engines. It is ideal for application where exhaust temperatures may be too low to guarantee continuous regeneration of the filter.

The TR is capable of initiating, maintaining and controlling regeneration at engine low-load and low-temperature operating conditions, making it an especially attractive and effective solution for stop-and-go vehicle and low exhaust temperature applications. This feature eliminates the possibility of having to initiate a manual regeneration cycle, whereby the truck is required to be stationary and idle for times generally ranging between 20 and 60 minutes.

Multiple configurations allow packaging and design flexibility for different applications. The intrinsic ability to regenerate on demand and control the exhaust temperature at levels of 650 degrees C, allow the use of uncatalized filters which are free from the significant cost and market fluctuations of precious metals such as platinum.

The TR may also be used as a temperature control and regeneration-assist module for SCR and LNT systems, where a minimum temperature needs to be maintained in order for effective NOx conversion. It is also offered with a dedicated control unit that can also function in predictive modes.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

The DPF is highly effective at removing the carbonaceous solids, liquids and other particulate emissions from diesel exhaust. Typically a ceramic wall flow filter is combined with a diesel oxidation catalyst in a single unit. The catalyst is able to remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and at the same time provide virtually continuous removal of trapped particulate matter from the filter. Filtration efficiencies may be as high as 99%. As well as being a major supplier to the passenger car market in Europe, EMCON Technologies is a leading supplier of the DPF product in the U.S. and European on-highway market. In the future, it is envisaged that nearly all large diesel engines will require a DPF to comply with regulations.

Atomizer

The Atomizer was developed as a means to inject hydrocarbons (normally diesel fuel) into an exhaust stream for the purpose of generating exothermic heat over a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) in order to actively regenerate a DPF. The Atomizer is also developed to enable operation of a Lean NOx Trap by introducing a brief rich atmosphere to reduce adsorbed nitrate. In addition, it can also provide heat for LNT and a rich atmosphere for desulfurization by exothermic reaction of the fuel over a DOC. The Atomizer can be used for a combined DPF/LNT system.

The air-assisted system has a control unit that assures accurate temperature control and fast response. In the DPF application, the software determines the optimum time and interval for regeneration.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

SCR is a highly efficient means of removing Nitrogen Oxide gases (NOx) from the exhaust emissions of diesel engines. It utilizes a reagent, 'AdBlue' to convert NOx emissions, the major contributor to smog, into water and Nitrogen, a component of clean air. AdBlue is injected at varying rates that follow the concentration of NOx present in the exhaust.

SCR is extensively and successfully used on on-highway medium- and heavy-duty truck applications in Europe and for many years, has been used to attain very low nitrogen oxide emissions from stationary sources around the world. SCR is an alternative to conventional non-aftertreatment emission reduction methods, providing flexibility to tune the engine for higher efficiency, thus improving engine fuel economy. Developments in the technology now permit conversion of NOx emissions to exceed 90%.

Combined DPF/SCR Systems

DPF and SCR systems are being combined to meet the next round of stringent emission regulations, such as U.S. 2010, Euro 6 and Tier 4/Stage 3B, where extremely low NOx and PM emission limits are mandated.

EMCON Technologies has pioneered the development of such systems and introduced the first fully integrated SCR/DPF unit to the European market in 2006. Development of this product is continuing in order to satisfy demand for the forthcoming regulations in Europe and America. Products are designed to achieve compact packaging, minimum weight, high durability, emissions and noise performance.

Future Systems

EMCON Technologies is continuing to provide advanced solutions to meet the future needs of its customers. The application of the burner system (TR) with SCR/DPF is seen as a way to enhance the performance of the SCR at low temperature and at the same time provide a reliable regeneration system for the filter unit. A major benefit of the TR is that it is possible to avoid the use of precious metals thus potentially saving the high cost associated with platinum and other expensive metals. Integration of the TR into SCR and DPF systems will be especially beneficial in many non-road applications where the duty cycle of the engine is highly variable.

EMCON Technologies has pioneered the development of combined DPF/SCR systems to meet the toughest emission standards yet to come. Such a system has been successfully launched and has been in production since 2007.
