New Paper: Lubricating oil consumption

Postby wam on Thu Nov 26, 2009 4:22 pm

We just added a new Technology Guide paper titled Measurement of Lubricating Oil Consumption, by Kent Froelund and Hannu Jääskeläinen. It's an overview of experimental, laboratory methods to quantify lube oil consumption in internal combustion engines. The discussed methods include direct measurement, gravimetric and volumetric, as well as radioactive and chemical tracer methods.

We are also putting finishing touches on a more general paper dealing with lube oil consumption, covering the sources of oil consumption and the lube oil formulation effects.

Happy reading!

Lubricating oil consumption + Piston-ring-liner system

Postby wam on Tue Dec 15, 2009 8:48 pm

The paper on Lubricating Oil Consumption is now live 8-) . It discusses the sources of oil consumption, including the piston-ring-liner system, valve stems, the turbocharger, and crankcase ventilation. The paper also discusses the effects of engine transients and lube oil formulation on oil consumption. 24 pages, 19 figures.

Additional discussion of the piston-ring-liner system is included in another new paper titled Piston-Ring-Liner Design for Low Oil Consumption. This paper covers bore distortion, piston ring conformability, liner surface finish, piston ring stability, and piston design. 13 pages, 14 figures.

In summary, the engine lube oil topics are now covered by the following papers:
