About DieselNet
What is DieselNet?
DieselNet is an internet information service on diesel engine emissions and all related topics including emission control, measurement, health, and environmental effects. DieselNet is addressed to engineers, researchers and students working with diesel emissions, as well as to several groups of diesel engine users who have to deal with emission related problems. We would like to focus on practical knowledge and information which would be useful for solving real life emission problems.
Who publishes DieselNet?
DieselNet has been developed and is published by Ecopoint Inc. Ecopoint is a consulting firm specializing in emissions from internal combustion engines and their control technologies. DieselNet is supported by industrial sponsors and by our subscribers. If you consider DieselNet to be a useful internet site we welcome your support by either sponsorship or subscription.
Moving Around on DieselNet
Can I access all documents?
Most documents on DieselNet are freely accessible. Access to some files, such as the technical papers in our Technology Guide section, is restricted to subscribers.
Subscribers should log in through the DieselNet log-in page. If you have not logged in and you attempt to download a restricted access document, you will be sent to the log-in page automatically.
How can I find documents I need?
A search page, powered by the very efficient Swish-e search engine, is available on DieselNet. You can perform boolean searches using your keywords to quickly find relevant documents.
Subscriber-only documents are also indexed and will show up on your search result file list even if you are not a subscriber.
Web Browser Technology
What web browser is required to view DieselNet documents?
DieselNet documents are coded to comply with the following web standards and recommendations adopted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and other internationally recognized organizations which develop internet protocols and specifications:
- Hypertext Markup Language XHTML 1.0
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS 2.1/CSS 3)
- JavaScript (officially: ECMAScript)
- Document Object Model (DOM 2)
There is a number of benefits from writing standard-compliant code. DieselNet pages can be read using any standard-compliant browser or internet device on any software platform, with no need for workarounds to account for quirks in particular web browser versions. Documents are also “forward compatible”, meaning that they will be correctly rendered by future versions of web browsers. We believe standard-compliant web sites are the only way to facilitate and maintain the open spirit of the internet.
Web browsers from all suppliers show increasingly better standard support. The newer versions of web browser software, which are strongly recommended to correctly render DieselNet pages, can be downloaded free of charge by following these links:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 7+
- Mozilla Firefox, version 3+
- Opera, version 9+
What if pages are not rendered correctly in my browser?
Errors in Pages
We are committed to writing clean and 100% error free code. You may use the W3C MarkUp Validator and W3C CSS Validator to check any of DieselNet pages for correctness. If you find errors in our pages, please let us know and we will fix them.
Old Browsers
Web standards are designed to “degrade gracefully” in old browsers which cannot understand them. That means that page contents should be still readable in old browsers, although the graphic formatting, typography, or other features may be lost. In practice, you may experience problems with browsers that have broken support for certain standards. For example, Netscape 4.x browsers will attempt to interpret cascading style sheets (CSS), even though they do not know how to do it correctly. As a result, certain pages may become unreadable. If you run into such problem, you may disable style sheets in your browser preferences; you will be able to read the page content stripped from CSS formatting.
How to view and print PDF files?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is becoming one of the standard internet file formats. Both text and graphics can be combined and coded as PDF. Since PDF documents always maintain exact page formatting, that format is very useful for files to be printed. There are a number of PDF documents and links to PDF documents on DieselNet.
You need to install Adobe Reader plug-in on your computer system in order to be able to view and print PDF files. The Adobe Reader can be downloaded for free from Adobe web site.
What is the format of video files on DieselNet?
When viewed online, certain DieselNet pages may contain embedded video files (the video will not be visible in printed documents). We could achieve the highest degree of compression using the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7. To play the video, we recommend the following players:
- QuickTime from Apple, for Windows and Mac, version 7+
- VLC player, a free cross-platform media player, version 0.8.2+
In most cases, you can configure the player as a plug-in, and view the video as a part of the page in your browser. If you are having difficulties, download the video through the provided link and try opening it in your player from your computer.
Any there any Java applets on DieselNet?
At this time no Java applets are used DieselNet. DieselNet pages will look the same, regardless whether Java is enabled or disabled in your browser preferences.
Technical Papers on DieselNet
Where can I find technical papers on DieselNet?
Technical papers are grouped in the Technical Reports area. Papers which are linked directly from the Technical Reports section are dated and include names and affiliations of their authors. Once published, they are not updated or changed. A special group of papers is accessible through the Technology Guide section. These papers include comprehensive continuously updated reference information on various diesel emission control topics (subscriber access).
Could my paper be published on DieselNet?
Yes. If you work in diesel emission research or related discipline your technical paper can be published on DieselNet. All papers must present technical merit and elements of novelty and their publication is subject to editorial review. Please contact us with paper offers.
About DieselNet Business Directory
What is the Business Directory?
DieselNet Business Directory is a comprehensive listing of suppliers for all products and services related to emissions. Because of the overlap in technology, the directory is not limited to diesel engines but includes products and services pertaining to emissions from all internal combustion engines. The companies in the directory are grouped into categories, such as “Engines”, “Engine & Emission Test Equipment”, “Research Laboratories”, etc.
Can my company get listed in the directory?
Yes, provided your business is related to emissions from internal combustion engines. Please fill in our listing form and, if you meet our criteria, your company will be added under the appropriate category in the Business Directory. The free standard listing includes your company name, mailing address, telephone, and fax number. A link to your web site may be included in the listing, provided you linked to DieselNet from your pages.
Customized directory listings are available in the form of DieselNet Business Pages. See the Sponsorship section for more information on our Business Pages.
How does the “request information” button work?
Custom listings in the Directory (or DieselNet Business Pages) include a “request information” button at the bottom of the respective page. That button serves the same function as Readers Reply Cards in printed magazines but it is much faster. After you click the button, a simple form will pop up in a separate browser window. You can fill in your contact information including the mailing address, telephone, etc., as well as your specific comments (e.g., “Please mail product literature on the Turbo Widgets”). After you click the “Submit Request” button the information is forwarded by e-mail, automatically and directly, to the respective product supplier. None of the information you submitted is recorded or kept on file on DieselNet server. If JavaScript is enabled in your browser, some of the information is stored on your hard drive as a “cookie”. The next time you use one of the “request information” buttons, your browser will pre-fill the form for your convenience.
