Review of Technology Available to the Underground Mining Industry for Control of Diesel Emissions

NIOSH, August 2002

The report reviews the performance and applicability of technology for the control of emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground coal and metal/nonmetal mines. The methods discussed include Mine Safety and Health Administration approved low emission engines, engine derating, fuels, fuel additives, diesel oxidation catalysts, and diesel particulate filters.

Controlling Diesel Engine PM in Underground Mines

Proceedings from the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division 1998 Fall Technical Conference

Slides/overheads (no full text available) from seven presentations focusing on the proposed MSHA regulations for underground coal mines that require 95% DPM reduction from existing engine-out levels. The authors represent government, industry, and emission control manufacturers.
Evaluation Of Biodiesel Fuel And Oxidation Catalyst In An Underground Metal Mine

UMN Report for the DEEP Program, September 1998 (PDF)

The study characterized the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and exhaust gas emissions in a non-producing test section of the Inco’s Creighton Mine in Sudbury, Ontario. During the first week of the evaluation a diesel-powered scoop was operated on petrodiesel. During the second week the scoop was operated on a 58% blend of biodiesel fuel and petrodiesel. The scoop was equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst. The objective of the evaluation was to determine changes in exhaust emissions and to estimate operating costs of a test vehicle fueled with blended biodiesel.
Diesel Toolbox

Practical Ways to Reduce Exposure to Diesel Exhaust in Mining - from MSHA, 1998

The document describes experiences of miners, mine operators and diesel equipment manufacturers in seeking to control diesel emissions. It is based on a series of MSHA workshops held in late 1995.
Emissions-Assisted Maintenance Procedure for Diesel-Powered Equipment

A NIOSH report prepared by M.W. Spears, UMN, 1997

A procedure that underground coal mine operators may use to comply with the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration’s regulation regarding weekly exhaust emissions testing of diesel-powered equipment.
