27 July 2002

On 25 July 2002, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed a proposal for new, more stringent emission standards for new motorcycles and gasoline-fueled recreational marine vessels, including sport, fishing and jet boats.

Emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from motorcycles would be reduced by 50%, through the harmonization of federal standards with the motorcyle standards, current and future, adopted by California. Evaporative hydrocarbon emissions from boats would be reduced by 80%. The new standards would become effective in 2006 for motorcycles and in 2008 for boats.

Public hearings on the proposal will be held on September 17 in Ypsilanti, MI, for motorcycles and on September 23 in Ann Arbor, MI, for boats.
