Tenneco has started production of a retrofit diesel particulate filter (DPF) for the European passenger car market. The system has been launched in advance of the legislation and tax incentives on retrofit DPFs that come into effect in The Netherlands this July, said Tenneco.
The Tenneco Walker® DPF features a “lightweight foam filter” substrate coated with precious metals. The catalytic converter and DPF are combined into one unit to facilitate a quick replacement of the original catalytic converter with the DPF without adding additional weight and without disturbing the vehicle’s NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) profile.
Walker DPFs are “fully-homologated”, said Tenneco. The DPF installation does not involve the engine electronics, with the filter relying exclusively on passive regeneration. Tenneco did not comment on the PM emission reduction efficiency of the foam filter or other technical details.
The DPF system has been developed in cooperation with, and will be supplied to Toyota. Tenneco will also supply aftermarket DPF units as a Tier 2 supplier to Sango and ArvinMeritor.
Tenneco will manufacture its Walker® DPF at its emission control manufacturing facility in Rybnik, Poland. System components will be coming from Japan, Germany, the UK, Turkey and Poland.
Tenneco has delivered over 1 million original equipment (OE) DPF units to the European car manufacturers since it produced first DPFs for Peugeot in 2000. Today the company supplies OE DPFs for DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E- Class and CLK passenger cars, Jaguar S-Type, VW Sharan and the Audi A6 and A4. The company also continues to supply PSA on its new Peugeot 407, Peugeot 807, Citroen C5 and C8, Fiat Ulysse and Lancia Phedra models.
