NOx Adsorbers

At the 2007 Geneva Motor Show which opens in March, Honda will be presenting a prototype of its next-generation diesel engine, first announced last year, which uses a new type of NOx reduction catalyst to achieve US EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions.

The catalytic converter combines a NOx adsorber catalyst (NAC) with an SCR catalyst. The catalyst has a two-layer structure: one layer adsorbs NOx and generates ammonia during the regeneration of the NOx adsorber. The other layer adsorbs the ammonia and uses it for an SCR reaction to further reduce NOx (without urea injection). The concept was described by Honda in a paper authored by Naohiro Satoh, presented at the Aachen Colloquium “Automobile and Engine Technology” in 2006.

Honda plans to introduce its next-generation diesel engine within three years.

In Geneva, Honda will be also presenting a new fully driveable FCX Concept fuel cell car, as well as the Small Hybrid Sports Concept designed by Honda R&D Europe based in Offenbach, Germany.
