SCA to equip vessels with NOx control catalysts

4 December 1998

Swedish SCA Graphic Paper announced it will equip its fleet of vessels with catalytic converters to control emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The catalyst technology will be SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with urea injection. This project is the largest scale marine engine SCR installation ever.

For an investment of SEK 20 million (around $2.5 million) a NOx reduction of 90 per cent or 1400 tons per annum will be achieved. That NOx emission reduction is more than the total NOx emissions from 3 paper mills operated by SCA. The cost effectiveness of the SCR technology to be installed on the ships was also found to be much higher in comparison to the technologies that are available for NOx control from the mills.

"We're now giving priority to reducing the emissions from the vessels, after having mainly concentrated up to now on cutting the emissions from our plants," said Chief Information Officer Bjorn Lyngfelt at SCA Graphic Paper.

The vessels will be fitted with the SCR catalyst systems during normal maintenance, starting from the spring of 1999.
