Corning opens diesel products facility in Erwin, NY

8 April 2004

Corning Incorporated, a supplier of ceramic substrates for diesel catalysts and particulate filters, yesterday celebrated the opening of its new clean-air products plant in Erwin, NY. The grand opening of the $200 million production facility was attended by New York Governor George Pataki.

The new large-scale manufacturing facility will produce catalyst substrates and filters for medium- and heavy-duty diesel applications, such as trucks and buses. Production of large diesel substrates began at the plant in January 2004. By January 2005, the manufacturing facility is expected to employ approximately 250 people. The construction of the plant was approved by Corning in 2001.

Demand for diesel emission control products continues to increase as tighter clean-air standards are implemented in the US, Europe and Asia. These regulations include US standards taking effect in 2007, as well as European rules set for 2005 (Euro IV) and for 2008 (Euro V). Corning estimates that new emission requirements for diesel vehicles will create a $1 billion worldwide market for substrates and filters by 2008.

Corning introduced cellular ceramic substrate in the early 1970’s that is now the standard for catalytic converters worldwide. In 1978, Corning developed the cellular wall-flow ceramic particulate filter to remove soot from diesel emissions.
