US EPA to fund nonroad diesel emission control demonstration projects

9 May 2005

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the availability of funds and is accepting applications for demonstration projects targeting diesel emission reduction from nonroad vehicles and equipment, such as those used in construction and port-related activities. EPA anticipates award of eight to twelve cooperative agreements, each ranging from $50,000 to $150,000. The total estimated funding for this project is up to $800,000.

Eligible activities include the use of EPA- or California ARB-verified diesel emission control technologies in nonroad diesel vehicles and equipment in public or privately owned fleets. Diesel engine/vehicle/equipment replacements or the application of cleaner fuels are also eligible. Applications will be accepted from state, local, multi-state, and tribal agencies, and other non-profit organizations. EPA requests notification of intent to apply by 27 May 2005. Complete applications must be submitted by 1 July 2005.

The solicitation is a part of the National Clean Diesel Campaign—an EPA’s initiative targetting diesel emission reduction in five sectors: school buses, ports, construction, freight, and agriculture. Funded projects will expand the scope of EPA’s efforts to reduce diesel emissions by serving as case studies for public and private entities considering retrofit strategies for nonroad vehicles and equipment.
