Volvo introducing Euro IV/V truck engines

Volvo Trucks has launched a new generation of trucks—the Volvo FH and Volvo FM—powered by a new 13-liter engine and an improved 9-liter engine that meet Euro IV and Euro V emission standards. The engines utilize selective catalytic reduction with urea (urea-SCR) as the main NOx emission reduction strategy.

The total investment in the development of the new trucks and engines was €300 million. The new truck models will be built in Göteborg and Ghent. First trucks will be delivered to customers in early 2006.
Urea-SCR has been chosen by Volvo as the main NOx reduction strategy for meeting the Euro IV/V emission standards. The Volvo approach is in opposition to Scania, who prefers the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology. Volvo will also offer selected models with EGR starting in the 2nd quarter of 2006. In the US market, Volvo engines use EGR since October 2002.
