Johnson Matthey demonstrating retrofit SCR system

26 March 2008

Johnson Matthey announced the completion of a demonstration program of retrofit selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology on highway trucks. The over 1,000 hours trial was conducted on 16 older Class 8 trucks owned by Raley’s, a Northern California grocery store chain.

The trucks were retrofitted with Johnson Matthey’s SCRT emission control system, which combines the two-stage CRT particulate filter with an SCR catalyst that reduces NOx by 60-80%.

The trial was conducted in partnership with Cummins Emissions Solutions, Raley’s, the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD), and the Sacramento Emergency Clean Air and Transportation program (SECAT).

During the 1,000-hour test, the SCRT system reduced NOx by an average of 84% compared to pre-retrofit levels. The trucks had 2004 Cummins, 400 hp ISM engines with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

Johnson Matthey said it is in the process of obtaining a verification for the SCR technology from the California Air Resources Board and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Johnson Matthey has nearly 50 demonstration units running in California and Texas, which accumulated thousands of hours of operation on both EGR and non-EGR engines.
