UPS to test diesel electric hybrid vehicle

4 January 1999

A hybrid diesel electric vehicle is to be tested by UPS. The vehicle has been developed by Navistar International Corp., Chicago, IL, and Lockheed Martin Controls Systems, Johnson City, NY.

The diesel engine drives a generator to provide electrical energy for 23 batteries and drive motors, which propel the vehicle. Regenerative braking uses the motors as brakes and recaptures the vehicle's energy that is then stored in the batteries for future use. The hybrid vehicle provides better fuel economy and has lower emission levels than conventional diesel.

The hybrid vehicle by Navistar/Lockheed Martin is a similar technology to the GM hybrid diesel electric transit buses, that are to be tested this year in New York.
