Emission Test Cycles

Braunschweig City Driving Cycle

Time-speed data points

The Braunschweig City Driving Cycle cycle was developed at the Technical University of Braunschweig. It is a transient driving schedule simulating urban bus driving with frequent stops. The cycle is performed on a chassis dynamometer.

The Braunschweig Cycle had been frequently used in various research projects, as well as for some equipment certification programs. With the introduction of the transient ETC cycle, the role of the Braunschweig cycle has diminished. Comparison studies indicated that the ETC produces about 40% lower power output and 30 - 70% lower regulated emissions than the Braunschweig cycle (AB Svensk Bilprovning Motortestcenter, Report 9707, 1997).

Vehicle speed over the duration of the cycle is shown in Figure 1.

The following are characteristics of the cycle:

  • Duration: 1740 s
  • Average speed: 22.9 km/h
  • Maximum speed: 58.2 km/h
  • Idling time: about 22% (the first and last idle segments not included)
  • Driving distance: about 11 km
